The reduced power requirement, coupled with improved efficiency in solar energy collection, has made solar-powered systems a viable primary power source.
The location of land-based AtoN is determined by mariners’ requirements, which may not always be easily accessible, and “mains” power may be unreliable or unavailable. By installing correctly sized solar power systems, a reliable power source can be established without the need for subterranean or pole-mounted cable connections to the power grid. This is particularly crucial when the AtoN requires underwater cabling, which is notoriously difficult to install and repair.
