- Background: The First Narrows passage, an essential gateway to Vancouver Harbour, presents unique navigational challenges, partly due to the height of the iconic Lions Gate Bridge. Recognizing the need for advanced navigational aids, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) partnered with Tidal Marine and the Canadian Coast Guard’s Western Region to deploy innovative AtoN solutions.
- Technical Challenges: The main technical hurdle involved overcoming the vertical divergence caused by the elevated position of the Lions Gate Bridge. The solution required a sophisticated design that ensured visibility of navigation aids from various distances without obstruction by the bridge’s structure.
- Solution Implemented: Tidal Marine’s approach involved the strategic placement of PEL-4 lights in tandem, enhancing vertical divergence to accommodate the varying distances of approaching vessels. This configuration offered a broadened sector light with a 13.4-degree vertical divergence, effectively addressing the navigational challenges posed by the bridge’s height.
- Additional Enhancements: To further aid navigation, four synchronized LED 160mm lanterns were installed. These are equipped with wire-based synchronisation to signal both incoming and outgoing vessels, providing crucial air draft awareness beneath the bridge.
